Tunesday: Deb Talan – “Big Strong Girl”

It’s Tuesday so that means at, it’s Tunesday! Every Tuesday, we will share a song with you that we love and hope you will too.

Every January, I choose a theme song for my year. I admit this with slight embarrassment, but also as I get older, I am more readily accepting and admitting the things that get me through this life, no matter how cheesy. For me, it’s important to have a touchstone song to revisit once the shine of a new year wears off. If you choose correctly, the song can reinvigorate your energy, remind you of the things you want to accomplish, and restore the fight in your soul. Or, as the song I have chosen for this year does, it can slow you down and remind you that this is the year you have been fighting for.

Previous years, I pushed out of my little seed of comfort and spread out my roots and reached and reached for the sun and the oxygen. This is the year I unfurl my leaves and bloom.

As this year’s song says: “Maybe in time you will find your arms are wrapped around the sun.”

I know the challenges I face this year will be mostly internal. My own insecurities, my need for perfect planning, and my fears of rejection are 2015’s enemies to conquer. Deb Talan’s “Big Strong Girl” will remind me throughout the year that no matter what those enemies say – “It’s not now or never. It’s not black and it’s not white. Anything worth anything takes more than a few days and a long, long night.”

“Big Strong Girl” appears on Deb Talan’s 2003 LP A Bird Flies Out. Listen to the song over on Spotify by clicking here.
